AIP President John Lau Describes the Challenges of Being Asian and American for DiversityInc Magazine Article
SOMERSET, NJ Appliedinfo president John Lau was interviewed by DiversityInc Magazine and featured in its April issue cover story, To Be Asian in America: Success & Stereotypes, Asian Leaders Define Their Place. Other prominent Asian American executives, entrepreneurs and politicians interviewed included Sabeer Bhatia, CEO of Navin Communications and founder of Hotmail; Rep. Mike Honda, D-California, Jane Yyun, author of Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling; Rohini Anand, Chief Diversity Officer of Sodexo.
In the special edition dedicated to Asian American stories, DiversityInc explored the wide variations in the Asian American population and featured different stories about what it means to be an Asian American. The participants shared their thoughts on professional challenges, assimilation, the model-minority stereotype and what keeps them up at night. The magazine also ranks and highlights the Top 10 Companies for Asian Americans.
Lau talked about the presence of a "glass ceiling" for Asian Americans who do not speak perfect English, play golf, or rub elbows with "the right people," making it more difficult for them to rise to the top. But he also emphasized that with hard work and determination, success is achievable.
